This is a favourite spot to stop on a canoe ride up the Black River, St Elizabeth, Jamaica. Beyond where the crocodiles swim, it is a lazy lagoon inlet where you can enjoy a Red Stripe and cool off with a dip in the river, or try a rope swing dunking.
Rich colour, blocky brushwork, focus on patterning and reflections, all create an impressionistic interpretation of the idyllic scene.
The deep colors in the water are created both from the delicious shade overhead, where the viewer is standing, and also from the mangrove tree roots. Mangrove trees line the banks of the Black River for most of its length and their roots give out a rich, russet, red-brown stain that makes the water look unnaturally dark - hence the name 'Black River'. Visually, this creates a striking contrast with the sunny water, farther from shore. where the blue sky reflects off the surface and the lily pad sparkle in the sunlight.
I wanted to capture the magic of this scene without resorting to fussy details, so the blocky brushes I use for acrylics were ideal.
