The sea holds so many fascinating colours, with foam and movement that I find it a constant source of inspiration.
This piece was painted in a semi-abstract, contemporary style in acrylic paints. The view looking straight down on the surface of the water from a cliff, shows the large sea-grape leaves floating and tossing on the foamy surface. The waves are bouncing back from the cliff face, creating complicated surface patterns as the incoming waves meet the returning ones. I'm hoping that gazing at the painting creates a sense of calm, as one ponders what lies beneath the surface, amid those jewel tones in the depths. The rigid square format is at odds with the organic, flowing subject matter, but makes us feel safe and secure as we gaze down onto the moving water. The inspiration came from the south coast of Jamaica, but could be anywhere in the Caribbean or tropics.
